Forces, Motion, and Newton's Laws

The Rules That Govern Movement

Forces cause objects to move or change direction. Sir Isaac Newton described three important laws that explain motion.

Newton's Laws

  1. First Law (Inertia): Objects stay at rest or in motion unless acted on by a force.
  2. Second Law: Force equals mass times acceleration \((F = ma)\).
  3. Third Law: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Why It Matters

These laws help engineers design vehicles, athletes improve performance, and pilots fly airplanes.

Real Life in Action

From launching rockets to bouncing basketballs, Newton's laws are everywhere!

Key Formula

\[F = ma\]

Examples

  • A skateboard stops quickly when you step off due to inertia.

  • A rocket launches by pushing exhaust downward, causing the rocket to move upward.

In a Nutshell

Newton's laws explain how and why objects move.
