The Rules That Govern Movement

Forces cause objects to move or change direction. Sir Isaac Newton described three important laws that explain motion.

Newton's Laws

1. First Law (Inertia): Objects stay at rest or in motion unless acted on by a force.
2. Second Law: Force equals mass times acceleration \((F = ma)\).
3. Third Law: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
