Study Strategies

Analyzing Maps and Visuals

Decode the Story in Every Map

Maps, graphs, and images are common on the AP Human Geography exam. Practice reading map legends, recognizing patterns, and connecting visuals to geographic concepts. Look for trends, clusters, and outliers.

  • Check scale and orientation first.
  • Identify what the map is showing (population, climate, etc).
  • Relate visuals to key terms and models.

Examples

  • Spotting the difference between a choropleth map and a dot distribution map.

  • Identifying urban growth patterns on satellite imagery.
