Using Context Clues

Unlocking Meaning Without a Dictionary

When you encounter unfamiliar words in French, look for hints in the sentence or surrounding text. Pay attention to similar words, pictures, or the topic being discussed. Guess the meaning and check if it fits the context. This skill is especially helpful for reading and listening tasks on the AP exam.

Examples

  • Figuring out that “la boulangerie” is a bakery because it appears next to words like pain and croissant.

  • Guessing the meaning of “embouteillage” by noticing the conversation is about traffic.
