ACT Math

A comprehensive course covering the essential math concepts and strategies needed to excel on the ACT.

Advanced Topics

Probability, Statistics, and Data Interpretation

Making Sense of Data

The ACT tests your ability to understand and analyze data, as well as calculate probabilities.

Probability Basics

  • Probability = \( \frac{\text{Number of favorable outcomes}}{\text{Total number of outcomes}} \)
  • Probabilities range from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain)

Statistics Essentials

  • Mean (average): Add up values, divide by the number of values
  • Median: The middle value when data is ordered
  • Mode: The value that appears most often
  • Range: Difference between highest and lowest values

Data Interpretation

  • Reading tables, charts, graphs
  • Drawing conclusions from data

Real-World Uses

Probability helps with board games or weather forecasts. Statistics are used in sports, business, and science.

ACT Tip

Always check what the question is asking—mean, median, or mode!

Key Formula

\[P(A) = \frac{n(A)}{n(S)}\]

Examples

  • Rolling a die: Probability of a 3 is \( \frac{1}{6} \)

  • Finding the mean of 2, 4, 6: \( \frac{2+4+6}{3} = 4 \ )

In a Nutshell

Probability and statistics help you make sense of data and chance.
