8th Grade Reading

8th Grade Reading focuses on enhancing comprehension, analysis, and critical thinking skills through diverse literary texts.

Basic Concepts

Critical Thinking and Inference

Reading Between the Lines

Critical thinking involves using clues in the text to make inferences—guesses based on evidence and reasoning. Authors don't always tell you everything directly. Instead, they leave hints in the characters' words, actions, and the setting.

How to Make Inferences

  • Look for clues in dialogue and description.
  • Use your own knowledge to fill in the gaps.
  • Ask yourself, "What does the author want me to figure out?"

Critical Questions

  • Why did the character act this way?
  • What do you think will happen next?
  • What is the author really trying to tell us?

Real-World Uses

Inference and critical thinking help you "read between the lines" in real-life situations, like understanding body language or interpreting the news.

Examples

  • Guessing how a character feels based on what they do, even if it’s not said.

  • Predicting the end of a story using clues from earlier chapters.

In a Nutshell

Critical thinking and inference help you uncover hidden meanings in texts.
