Summarizing Texts

Getting to the Heart of the Story

Summarizing means retelling the most important parts of what you read in your own words. A good summary is short, only includes the main ideas, and leaves out unimportant details.

How to Summarize

  • Identify the main characters and setting.
  • State the main problem and how it’s solved.
  • Leave out small details or side stories.

Why Summarizing Is Useful

Summarizing helps you remember what you read and share it easily with others.

Examples

  • After reading a chapter, you write two sentences about what happened and why it matters.

  • You explain a news article to a friend in just a few sentences.
