Evaluating Author’s Purpose and Point of View

Why Did the Author Write This?

Authors have reasons for writing. Understanding their purpose and point of view helps you see the text in a new way.

Types of Purpose

  • To inform: Giving facts or information.
  • To entertain: Telling a story or making you laugh.
  • To persuade: Trying to convince you of something.

Identifying Point of View

  • Is the author writing as themselves ("I," "we") or about others?
  • Do they have opinions or stick to facts?

Real-World Application

Knowing why something was written helps you decide if you can trust the information, like reading ads or news stories.

  • Recognizing an article is trying to persuade you to recycle more.
