Why Did the Author Write This?

Authors have reasons for writing. Understanding their purpose and point of view helps you see the text in a new way.

Types of Purpose

  • To inform: Giving facts or information.
  • To entertain: Telling a story or making you laugh.
  • To persuade: Trying to convince you of something.

Identifying Point of View

  • Is the author writing as themselves ("I," "we") or about others?
  • Do they have opinions or stick to facts?

Real-World Application
