Study Strategies

Using Picture Clues

Pictures Are Clues!

Pictures in stories and books give you important hints about what’s happening. When you get stuck on a word or are not sure what’s going on, look at the pictures for help. They can show you how characters feel, what the setting looks like, or what will happen next!

  • Look at the characters’ faces and actions
  • Notice what’s happening in the background
  • Match what you see to the words you read

Using picture clues makes reading easier and helps you understand the story better.

Examples

  • Looking at a picture of a rainy day to understand why a character is carrying an umbrella.

  • Seeing a drawing of a lion helps you figure out that the word 'roaring' means making a loud sound.
