Study Strategies

Sound It Out

Breaking Down Words

If you find a word you don’t know, try sounding out each letter or group of letters. Go slowly and put the sounds together. This strategy helps you read new and tricky words all by yourself!

  • Say each sound out loud
  • Blend the sounds together

Sounding out words is a great way to become a stronger reader.

Examples

  • Reading 'frog' as /f/ /r/ /o/ /g/ then blending it together

  • Sounding out 'bat' as /b/ /a/ /t/ and saying the whole word
